Updated: Sep 14, 2023

Are you on the hunt for a cost-free, sports-oriented activity that's also environmentally friendly for your kids? Look no further!

What is Junior parkrun?

Junior parkrun is a remarkable initiative designed specifically for children between the ages of 4 and 14, aimed at encouraging them to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. Inspired by the success of the popular parkrun events for adults, Junior parkrun offers young participants the opportunity to take part in a weekly 2-kilometer run in a safe and supportive environment. These events are held in local parks and are entirely free to attend, making them accessible to families from all walks of life. Junior parkrun not only promotes physical fitness and well-being but also nurtures social connections and personal development. It's a fun-filled and inclusive activity that has captured the hearts of young runners around the world.

When does it take place?

The junior Parkrun, known for its punctuality, kicks off every Sunday morning at 9am, setting it apart from the regular Parkrun that typically takes place on Saturdays at the same time.

Do I need to register my child prior to the event?

To ensure your child receives a finishing time and position, pre-registration is required for the Junior Parkrun. If you live in the UK, simply visit the Parkrun website, search for the nearest Parkrun and register to obtain a unique barcode for your child. It's crucial that your child carries this printed barcode during their run to accurately record their participation.

What is the age limit for Junior Parkrun?

Children participating in Junior parkrun must be between the ages of 4 and 14 years old. They can join on their 4th birthday or any day before they turn 15.

Can I run with my child at Junior Parkrun?

Absolutely! Children have the option to run independently with the enthusiastic support of parkrun's volunteers, or you can join them in creating a memorable family outing. It's important to keep in mind that adults should not cross the finish funnel and won't receive an official finishing position.

What are incentives for Junior Parkrunners?

In contrast to the regular parkrun, where participants earn club t-shirts according to their completed runs, juniors are awarded vibrant wristbands and certificates based on their total number of runs accomplished.

Both junior parkrun volunteers, including junior volunteers, and regular parkrun volunteers will be honored with a 25 volunteer t-shirt once they reach this significant milestone.

How to check for the nearest Junior Parkrun?

If you live in the UK, simply visit the Junior Parkrun website and zoom-in the map.

What a Junior Parkrun result look like?

Just after the event finishes, an email is sent to the parents of all the Junior parkrunners. It will be similar to the one I have received just last week.

To get a full view of the results you will need to click on "view your results" and it will lead you to Parkrun's website where you will be able to see a chart as below.

Volunteer while your child is running

While your child is participating in Junior Parkrun, you can join the event as a volunteer and contribute to the smooth running of the event. From marshalling the course to scanning barcodes, there are various roles available that allow you to support the event while still being able to cheer on your child during their run.
